Diet For Diabetes
Most people will have come across a friend or relative that suffers from the condition known as diabetes, it is estimated that over 170 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes.
To understand the condition and the dietary requirements one needs to comprehend what the condition exactly is!
As the global numbers would suggest Diabetes is a common condition where by the glucose or sugar levels in the blood are abnormally high,
Blood sugar levels are normally controlled by a hormone called insulin which is produced by an organ called the pancreas.
Insulin regulates the body’s sugar or glucose intake which mostly deprives from the digestion of starchy foods such as bread and pasta and of course sweets or candy, and is used to fuel the body’s energy requirements, a diabetic person would find themselves in a position whereby the pancreas is not producing insulin in adequate supply to regulate the glucose intake thus not providing energy for the body to function in a normal manner.
Without sufficient insulin to breakdown and distribute the body’s glucose or sugar levels this it left in the blood stream at what can be exceptional levels.
Diabetes has been categorised in two forms,
Type 1 (Insulin Dependent)
Type 2 (Non Dependant)
Diabetes develops when the body stops producing insulin, this is because of a breakdown of the pancreas and is treated by the introduction of insulin from an external source usually in the form of an injection, Statistics show this condition will generally develop in mature persons before the age of 40.
This occurs when the body is still producing insulin which the quantity or quality may be lacking to keep the body at full health and functioning well, type 2 diabetes can be treated by dietary modification and is commonly found in persons with weight issues.
It is not uncommon for diabetes to go untreated and the basic symptoms may include , Increased Thirst , Extreme Tiredness , Weight Loss , Blurred Vision to name but a few.
